I write about my health because I believe that I have been given a gift—hepatitis C. A disease can be an end or a beginning. In my case, it was a beginning—an opportunity to get healthy. Adelle Davis said, “As I see it, every day you do one of two things: build health or produce disease in yourself.”
I write about it because plain and simple, I am a writer. Writers write about what they know. I have worked with hepatitis C in one way or another since 1997. First in my community at a syringe exchange site, then at Stanford Medical Center, and continually with the Hepatitis C Support Project. If I wasn’t writing about hepatitis C, I’d find something else to write about, but quite frankly, I never run out of things to say about this virus.
