Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing. ~ Albert Schweitzer
It is easy to feel powerless and grouchy when we aren’t well, especially when hepatitis C is advanced or causing many symptoms. However, when we succumb to the very worst that hepatitis C can heap on us, it amounts to surrendering to the virus.
I know people who laugh in the face of this disease—patients more stoic than I have ever been. They taught me to keep my humor, my dignity, and to not let hepatitis C have all of me. Patients taught me that we aren’t powerless, and not feeling well doesn’t mean we have to be bad-tempered.
The expression “act as if” means we can act the way we want to feel. Act as if we are energetic; act as if we are happy. Act as if we are at our very best. Acting as if can turn a smoldering spark into a bright fire of illumination. When we light that fire, we become a shining example to those around us who are also struggling.
