Naming Hepatitis C Drugs

Some people celebrate their birthdays for an entire month. I’d rather celebrate April Fool’s Day for 30 days. One day of humor is just not enough for me. Here is today’s offering…

Naming Hepatitis C Drugs

Naming Hepatitis C Drugs

I have a fairly good memory for remembering drug names. Hepatitis C drugs used to be easy to remember since there weren’t many. First, there was interferon. Eventually, ribavirin and peginterferon were approved. Then the list expanded to boceprevir and telaprevir.

Recently, simeprevir, sofosbuvir, and ledipasvir joined the pack. I thought I’d lose it when the AbbVie hepatitis C treatment using ombitasvir, paritaprevir, dasabuvir, and ritonavir was approved.

The new drugs all end “vir.” The trade names are not much easier to remember. So, I propose that we make things easier for our hepatitis C brains by coming up with memorable names. Here are some suggestions:

  • ByeBye HepC
  • DynOmite HepC
  • HepC Killer
  • HepC Relief
  • HepC-B-Gone
  • Liver Renew
  • Sayonara HepC
  • Side-FX
